Violent crimes have decreased in the U.S., and increased gun ownership has clearly helped. But here we go: another TSA for schools.
By Jack E. Lohman
Yes the anti-gun advocates are calling for abolition after the school killings in Connecticut. And I understand their ire. But the truth is that eliminating guns today, after decades of (bad) gun freedoms, would not be possible and perhaps not even advisable.
Then what? Get rid of baseball bats? Knives? Poisons? Hands that strangle?
Taking away honest people’s protection is not the answer, but changes are due.
The CT shooter was clearly sick. But wouldn’t you rather have the problem studied by congressmen who were not taking campaign bribes from the NRA (National Rifle Association)? You know, studied by political leaders who are not on the take from gun manufacturers?
Politicians should not get a free pass on this
Clearly the cash bribes from the gun manufacturers play a key role on gun votes in congress. Or the bribes wouldn’t be given. Transparency International lists the U.S. political system as 24th-honest in the world. Not first; 24th! So what do we expect of our kids?
Think about it! Justice Dept. Shelved Ideas to Improve Gun Background Checks Is this a stretch? I don’t think so.
And of course mental illness is a contributor, as is the healthcare money we spend to treat it. And I expect we’ll hear that drugs were involved, but let’s not let a failed drug war influence us.
Roughly 40% of gun owners have bypassed gun laws on background checks, likely because of weak laws on used gun sales.
And, thanks to our corrupt political system, some day these guns will be used to fuel an armed rebellion in America. Unless we clean up our politicians.
Home and internet schooling is looking better every day
Things that can be done and would serve as deterrents:
- All school employees (principle, teachers, janitor) should have guns (or access) and be properly trained on their use.
- School doors should be reinforced (bulletproof glass, alarms, etc.)
- Every schoolroom should have a “safe” closet with internal locks (where an armed teacher can hide children).
- Consider an armed guard for every school.
And now hospital killings? We must warn shooters… when you are dead, it is OVER!
This is just the beginning, but look at the new jobs we will create. We maybe can’t stop it but we can greatly reduce it.

Indeed, we should have the common sense to put these individuals in a special needs class so they don’t feel alone.
Schools are targeted because they have no guns. With regard to gun control, we need not worry. We KNOW who wears the pants in this family, the NRA. But arming teachers and principals is wise.
